The game of sling and fling! In the Madison race, there are two riders per team,
with multiple teams participating. Both riders are on the track at the same time,
but only one teammate is racing at a time. Each rider decides how many laps
they want to race. When they are ready for a rest, their teammate comes down
the track to make the exchange. How is it possible? It's tricky and takes
practice. The one rider comes by and grabs the hand of the teammate and
flings the teammate forward to get her up to speed. The rider then goes up track
to roll around the boards waiting for her turn to get back in the race. When the
bell rings, it is a sprint to the finish. Interestingly enough, the Madison race
began as a way to get around a law that was passed in New York in the late
1800's, preventing riders from reaching exhaustion when participating in 6 day
races.
